Restrict other browsers on Android

Use Family Link to review browser access and require approval for new downloads.

Content updated · Official sources reviewed; confirm settings on your device

Milo controls browsing inside Milo. Your device’s parental controls manage access to other browsers and apps. Setting a default browser alone does not restrict other browsers.

Available controls vary by device and account. Some apps cannot be blocked. If a browser remains usable, this setup has not established Milo as the only available browser.

Before you start

  • Install Milo using an available portal download link.
  • Set up Family Link supervision for the child’s Google Account on their Android device.
  • Have the child’s device online and your parent Family Link app available.

Review and block browser apps

  1. Select your child. Open Screen time → Time limits → App limits.
  2. Choose Chrome and set it to Blocked if that option is available. Repeat for other browsers, including manufacturer browsers such as Samsung Internet. Leave Milo allowed.
  3. Keep the child’s device online and allow about five minutes for changes to arrive. Open each browser on that device to check the result.

Keep in mind: App time limits and app blocking are different controls. System apps cannot have app limits, and some essential apps cannot be blocked.

Require approval for new apps

  1. Open Controls → Google Play → Purchases & download approvals. Choose Require approval for → All content.
  2. Review previously approved apps and other app stores on the device. Google Play approval does not cover every installation route.

Keep in mind: Previously installed or approved apps, and apps available through Play Family Library, may download without another approval. Block unwanted apps explicitly.

Review the remaining ways to browse

Check retained apps, search widgets, and links from messages or games. Review any guest or additional user profiles and installation from other sources. If these provide unrestricted web access, change the device controls or restrict the relevant app before handing over the device.

If Chrome or another browser cannot be blocked

Check the manufacturer’s supported parental controls. Family Link’s Chrome website filters can provide additional restrictions, but they do not make Milo the only browser or copy Milo’s approved list. For a short session on an adult’s device, use app pinning with credentials the child does not know.

Troubleshooting

A blocked app still opens

Reconnect the device, wait for Family Link changes, and check the correct child account and device. If the app is not blockable, use supported manufacturer controls or treat it as remaining web access.
